There is often a hesitancy to purchase a used piano. However, with the proper care and restoration, used upright pianos can look and sound just like a newer model. In addition, they cost a lot less. Music is an integral part of life. Thankfully used pianos help make music that much more accessible and affordable.

That being said, without researching, it can be challenging to know what you should be looking to pay. Trying to understand the benefits of buying used over new can be confusing. As such, here we will be discussing how much you would be looking to pay for an old piano. As well as this, what exactly you can do with it.

How much is an old piano worth?

It is difficult to give an exact number of what you should expect to pay for an old piano. This is because the price will vary based on several factors. Piano appraisers will typically use three methods to determine the correct market value of a used piano. These factors are

  • comparable sales
  • depreciation; and
  • value minus the cost of restoration.

However, as a general guide, you should expect to pay a minimum of £1500 for good quality used pianos. This ensures that it has been adequately restored, is in good working order and has proper touch and tone. It is often easy to be enticed by used pianos at a much lower price point. However, they may require hundreds or even thousands of pounds if they have not been maintained.

What can I do with an old piano?

Buying a used piano can be an excellent way to reignite your passion for playing the piano. It’s also a great way to learn a new skill. Not everyone has the funds to purchase a newer piano model. So buying second hand can be a great option for those looking to access music within a specific budget.

You may also find that used pianos can be great for children looking to learn how to play a musical instrument. Learning to play the piano is a great way to teach children discipline. It opens their minds to the arts, and help their brains develop during those all-important years. That being said, a piano is an investment. You may be hesitant to spend thousands on a new model in case your child loses interest after six months.

Second-hand upright pianos ensure that even if your child does lose interest, you can resell them without having to worry about depreciation. It’s a great way to reduce any potential financial losses.
