Steingraeber & Sohn Model 170

The Steingraeber & Söhne A-170 Grand Piano is a salon grand piano, and one of the company’s smallest grand pianos in its range. Yet, Steingraeber & Söhne are reluctant to refer to the model as a ‘baby grand piano’ as it has achieved so many ‘Best in its Class’ awards, that have acclaimed the sound for being much bigger than you would expect.

Steingraeber has joint top ranking in Performance, Confidence, Quality control and Warranty in Group 1 ‘Highest quality performance pianos’ in The Piano Book by Larry Fine. The Steingraeber & Söhne A-170 Salon Grand Piano will be found on stages, in opera houses and musical schools with a limited space, offering its resonating sound and projection, in a much smaller designed cabinet. This piano is available in a variety of finishes, from
simple polished ebony to a selection of rare and exotic woods.

What you should know about Steingraeber & Söhne A-170 Grand Piano

The Steingraeber & Söhne A-170 Grand Piano is a highly professional and refined instrument, perfect for performances. With a highly responsive touch, this grand piano is favoured by advanced, demanding pianists for its capability and versatility. The A-170, used in Oslo Opera House, is the only top-rated salon grand piano, because it transmits much more vibrational energy as if it was a concert grand piano. Its exceptionally large, wide shape allows for the use of much longer bass strings, for a deeper and clearer sound, whilst its bass bridge design reduces thin, metallic tones typical of small, baby grand pianos. The Steingraeber & Söhne A-170 Grand Piano is a high quality instrument, made with only the finest materials and German craftsmanship typical of the Steingraeber & Söhne name. Its timeless and classic design is attractive to the eye, whilst its dynamic balance and rich sound will satisfy the needs of all professional pianists.

Steingraeber do not consider their Salon Grand Piano A-170 to be a “baby grand,” because it impresses one as much larger than its 170 cm (5’7”) would suggest. Its projection and volume are truly surprising for an instrument of its size. In physical terms, this phenomenon is based upon its unusually wide tail, which results in very long bass strings. The bass bridge also manages to do without bridgework, just like large grand pianos. The sophisticated, action mechanism, built to the highest specifications, makes it a truly professional instrument.

A bit about Steingraeber & Söhne Pianos

Steingraeber & Söhne are a German manufacturer of custom-made pianos loved by professionals, instructors and music enthusiasts alike. With excellence and traditional craftsmanship at the heart of the brand, Steingraeber & Söhne pianos create the perfect harmony between pianists and pianos. Since 1852, these wonderful instruments have been made to very limited numbers in Bayreuth, Germany and their list of proud owners include Franz Liszt whose last piano can be found in the grand yet welcoming residence of the Steingraeber family. Udo Schimdt-Steingraeber and his talented team of artisans produce exquisite instruments which, for those in the know, are considered to be amongst the finest pianos made today. We have sold several of their instruments to famous musicians who up until their visit to our showroom, were not aware of their existence. They are also responsible for many innovations including the optional SFM ‘grand feel’ action on their uprights and the unique pedalling system for wheelchair bound players.
