A bit on Welmar Pianos
Manufactured in Clapham, South London - Welmar Pianos were another manufacturer considered to be one of the UK’s leading piano manufacturers. Owned by Whelpdale Maxwell and Codd from the very beginning the birth of the Welmar piano was a direct result of World War 1. WMC were the importers of the Bluthner Piano, but with the coming of the War, imports stopped and the business was left wondering what to do.
It was only in 1925 that they started to produce pianos under the Wemar name, and continued to do so until their lease in London came to an end in the mid 1990s. They continued to manufacture in Gloucestershire, joining forces with Woodchester Pianos (who were also manufacturing the Bentley Piano) and eventually WMC became the holding company of Bentley, Hopkinson, Knight, Rogers, Gehr. Steinberg, Woodchester, and Zender.
